Katey noticed Austin had an issue with touching around his neck which we needed to work on, as well as some fear of visiting the vets. Katey showed us how to apply Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT), which helped him overcome this.
Austin began training as a puppy as soon as he was fully vaccinated. Initially we needed help with basic commands and socialisation.
The training techniques are reward based and force-free which we found has worked really well with Austin. Clicker training him was a new thing for me but I am extremely impressed with how effective it is.
The commands begin with the basics and increase in difficulty as you continue the course. This really encourages you to practice at home and also keeps your dog challenged and therefor keeps their interest.
Katey will often set challenges for when you are not at class and encourages you to upload the results to social media which again helps you to continue the training out of class time. In addition each person must complete a socialisation chart which ensures your puppy gets the varied experiences he needs away from class time.
The classes are kept small which allows Katey to give everyone a bit of one-to-one time. In addition Katey will make observations about your dogs behaviour and advise you, even if you have not noticed anything is amiss! Austin is an intelligent breed dog and these classes have helped us to teach him good behaviours + ensure that he is mentally challenged.
I like to think that today Austin is a well socialised, confident dog and these classes have been a huge part of that, so thank you very much! I would 100% recommend these classes to anyone regardless of the age of their dog, Katey's insight into dog behaviour is worth the fee in its own right.
I have always enjoyed training my dogs by food lure and have experienced quite a few hurdles over the 6 years and I just put it down to my dogs not being particularly clever!
Recently, my larger, more 'crazy' dog broke her toe which meant she was doomed to no long walks. I was stressed at the thought. I knew I needed to stimulate her other ways so did more training to aid in wearing her out. However because she wasn't getting any exercise she would lunge and fail to focus on any training with me. I was at my wits end, I was stressed taking her for dressing changes, which were every three days.
I know Katey personally, however have never trained with her or Pooch Paws, she approached me and mentioned trying some basic clicker training with Star. A little bit dubious, I thought about it and realised I had nothing to loose! After 30 minutes, she took to the clicker and was performing better than before she had broke her toe.
Since that first night, Star has learnt a better and calmer 'down', to 'sit’ and wait' while I put my dog walking jacket on and pick up her lead. She has learnt to 'show me her belly' and I am now shaping a 'play dead' and a 'close the door'. I am so glad I gave clicker training a go. I can honestly say I have no negatives to put forward and I will always use the clicker forevermore. She's a different dog and more focused when it comes to training.
We gave Buster and Maisie two English Bull terriers (aged 5) a 'forever' home from an animal rescue centre, they informed us that Buster had problems socialising with other dogs. While walking buster on the lead he appeared in a heighten state of anxiety, with raised hackles constantly and when he saw another dog he would show signs of serious aggression. After just 2 weeks he slipped the lead during a walk and attacked another dog. We decided to give Katey a call!
She gave us some realistic and sound advice and showed us how to undertake clicker training with both dogs. This helped us build a bond with the dogs and they loved it. The training also increased their response to our commands in the home and noticed some improvements with Buster during his walk, where he became more engaging, but he still continued to show signs of aggression towards other dogs.
Katey then introduced BAT training, where she explained the theory behind this and various simple, practical techniques we could do on his walk. She gave us her time and patience working with Buster in both a controlled, safe environment and out in the community.
We were able to implement what we had learnt during each walk and have noticed significant improvements in Buster's presentation before and during the walk, he now gets excited about 'walkies' rather than anxious and calmer during the walk taking more notice of his surroundings. He will still react when he sees a dog, he is more likely to bark and growl now and choose to walk/run away from the dog rather than confront it. The big change is now when he sees a dog we can get his attention and divert him away from the dog and back to his walk. Around the home he is much more confident, no longer scared of the hoover or hair dryer.
Katey's knowledge, skills and passion for the job is inspirational and I more than happy to continue to recommend her to my dog friends, thank you Katey!

Kim Thain – 5 star's - Frank loves going to Pooch Paws, and so do we. At first we mainly wanted Frank to meet and mix with other dogs, but through Kateys excellent training, her patience and good tips Frank has learnt so much and so have we. It is very clear not only is Katey very good at what she does she also cares for the dogs and always has time to answer any questions or worries
Lisa Roberts – 5 star's - Had one session today, very helpful and gave me food for thought! Will be booking up further slots to continue training. Thanks!
Gilly Bursnoll – 5 star's - Excellent training - and most important of all the dogs love it!
Ruth Davies - 5 star's - Just finished the puppy classes & now going to the next level. Great lessons we have learnt so much & Hugo has responded very well. I would recommend this to ALL new puppy owners-commands, socialisation & lots of support. Thank you so much, Ruth & Hugo x
Annie Barrows - 5 star's - We have really enjoyed the beginner's training classes! Katey has such a wealth of knowledge about dog behaviour, training and care, her passion and enthusiasm are really inspiring! The classes are friendly and relaxed and we love that they're based on success and reward. In addition to the training, Katey gives lots of advice and suggestions that really help. The class sizes are just right so there are other dogs for our Yorkshire Terrier, Wally to socialise with but plenty of one to one help. Wally is a nervous dog, the training has really benefitted him not only in learning 'sit', 'down', 'come' etc but he is now a much more confident, less anxious dog. The training and practice at home has really developed my relationship and bond with him as well. We highly recommend Pooch Paws and we're really looking forward to going on to do the 'progression classes', thank you Katey!
